Should I put the team slide at the beginning of my pitch deck?

The short answer is, no.

Nobody cares about your team slide. That is, not until they know what you’re doing.

🤔

Sometimes, founders ask if they should put their team slides first in their #pitchdeck. I do not recommend they do this.

🤓

Consider the order in which you receive the following information:

Option 1:

  • We are MIT professors, Rodale Fellows, and accomplished chefs.

  • We’re inventing delicious, plant-based ice cream that is healthier than broccoli and cheaper than regular ice cream.

Option 2:

  • We’re inventing delicious, plant-based ice cream that is healthier than broccoli and cheaper than regular ice cream.

  • We are MIT professors, Rodale Fellows, and accomplished chefs.

🍦

Do you see how with option 2, learning about the team supports the concept that you’re already curious about? And most likely, if you do feel curious, it's because you share a few beliefs with the messenger:

  • the belief that plant-based foods are better for everyone than dairy

  • the belief that people need more delicious healthy food options

When we establish common beliefs, we connect with our audience on a deep level. We encourage curiosity. But when we bust in the door talking about our own résumé, we don’t connect with anyone.
