Is social media a waste of money for an early stage startup?

A lot of people tell me their business needs a better social media presence. And some probably do. As for the rest, they might be better off saving their money

Social media is a great tool for awareness, retention, and growth, especially for consumer brands. But if you’re not reaching your audience where they are, a social media strategy can be a bad investment. For example, a B2B SaaS company that hires an agency to do 12 pieces of content a month on Instagram could be wasting their hard-earned capital. Consider these risks:

  1. The target buyer is not on Instagram.

  2. The target buyer is on Instagram but uses it mainly for socializing and shopping for clothes.

Before rolling out a social media strategy, consider who you’re selling to. Where do they look for solutions? It may not be the first place you think.
